Sandwell House Projects First Overnight Trip
Posted 18th August 2024
August 15th- marked our first overnight trip away with cohort 1 of Sandwell’s House Project. The overnight trip is an opportunity for members of the group to spend some time together, challenge themselves and take part is some fun activities and this was definitely achieved. After arriving at The Frank Chapman Centre and settling the group got stuck into their first activity which was Archery and we have more than a few sharp shooters within the group. This first activity epitomised what The House Project is all about and how the group worked together to support and encourage each other all while being competitive and having fun. Team building activities were next of the agenda with the group completing a number of challenges by working together and overcoming obstacles.
The evening saw a range of different activities including cards, ball games and even some apple picking all after a Vanessa had cooked dinner for everyone. The weather might have tried its best to dampen the mood but the group made the most of their night and some even staying up until the very early hours of the morning but with mountain biking and high ropes on the agenda for the next day this might not have been the best choice.
After being fuelled by a banquet at breakfast cooked by Lesh, the group split into two to take part in high ropes and mountain biking which both provided equal but very different challenges. Those taking part in the mountain biking completed the route and made it up the dreaded cardiac hill while those taking part in the high ropes faced their fears and took on the leap of faith with great success.
The overnight trip presented an opportunity for the first Sandwell House Project film to be made which was a fitting end to our time away. Roll on next year!

From welcoming new partnerships and celebrating over 500 young people moving into their homes, to welcoming new Local House Projects and expanding the NHP team, we’ve seen real momentum in our mission to support care leavers.

Young people tell us that the House Project approach helps significantly, but we should never underestimate the enormous challenges they face at such a critical time in their lives. This reality was brought home to us recently with Sue’s decision to swap her working life at NHP for retirement caring for her new granddaughter two days a week. Even though Sue is fully in control of this decision-making process - something our young people often are not - the transition has still been discombobulating; letting go of something she enjoys and that has defined her, and moving on to something that will be incredibly rewarding and joyous.
